Job Description
Summary: City of Dallas is committed to helping you thrive while you help our city flourish. The Computer Operator I performs entry-level technical operation of complex data processing equipment and provides clerical support, assisting senior operations staff in ensuring effective data processing.
Responsibilities:
- Operates, uses, and manipulates computer master and printer consoles to issue MVS/ESA, CICS, LINC, GAZE, and JES2 commands to provide timely computer output
- Detects, investigates, and corrects errors by making changes to the input and output flow of data; retrieves information from programmers to improve efficiency of mainframe computer operations
- Evaluates, reviews, and verifies the quality and integrity of input and output data to ensure users receive accurate and complete reports
- Schedules, updates, and modifies JCL, and executes programs and transmittals using J SYSTEM phases for regular production jobs to maximize efficiency of mainframe computer
- Issues VAX, AFIS, and Local Area Networks (LANs) commands to perform daily and recovery processing
- Performs magnetic tape technical processing duties to ensure data availability and manually checks computer to ensure output for accuracy and print quality
- Monitors batch job flow, detects errors in job submitted by departmental programmers and analysts; effects change in programs through CICS and LINC terminals and places output data in bins for programmers and users
- Uses hand tools to perform minor maintenance and cleaning of magnetic tape equipment and printers
- Performs a variety of activities such as filing, answering phones, talking to customers, using facsimile and copy machines, maintaining records of CRT, microfiche, and report bursting and distribution to provide clerical support
- Assists with and maintains off-site disaster recovery storage
- Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- One (1) year of paid work experience
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record
- No felony or class A misdemeanor convictions
- No class B misdemeanor convictions within the last ten (10) years
- No family violence convictions
- Cannot currently be on any active deferred adjudication for any felony, class A misdemeanor or class B misdemeanor charge
- Knowledge of Job Control Language (JCL)
- Basic knowledge of data processing with production or operations
- Knowledge of various commands and computer functions
- Ability to perform basic maintenance on equipment and materials
- Ability to diagnose and resolve computer console operating problems
- Ability to understand technical instructions through verbal and written communication
- Ability to effectively manipulate console controls and mount tapes in drives
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
Preferred Qualifications:
- An Associate degree or higher in any field will meet the education and experience requirements
