This position is responsible for leading and supporting athletic leagues and recreational programs that bring community members together through sports and active living. The role focuses on creating positive, inclusive, and well-organized experiences for participants of all ages and skill levels. Responsibilities include planning and coordinating leagues and events, collaborating with coaches, volunteers, and community partners, and ensuring programs are safe, engaging, and responsive to community needs. Working under general supervision, this position exercises independent judgment in organizing operations, solving problems, and enhancing program quality to promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and overall community well-being.
Position Duties
- Builds welcoming, inclusive environments that encourage participation from individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with participants, parents, coaches, officials, volunteers, and community partners.
- Listens to community needs and feedback, using input to improve programs, resolve concerns, and enhance participant satisfaction.
- Recruits, trains, supports, and evaluates coaches and volunteers to ensure quality instruction, sportsmanship, and participant safety.
- Plans, organizes, and oversees athletic leagues, events, and activities to ensure they are engaging, well-coordinated, and accessible.
- Promotes a culture of teamwork, respect, and fair play by modeling professionalism and holding participants accountable to program standards.
- Communicates clearly and consistently with participants and families regarding schedules, expectations, policies, and program updates.
- Monitors program activities to ensure safe practices, addresses conflicts constructively, and responds promptly to incidents or concerns.
- Collaborates with internal staff and community organizations to expand opportunities and strengthen recreational offerings.
- Evaluates program effectiveness through participant interaction, observation, and data collection to continuously improve service delivery.
- Assists with budgeting, resource allocation, and administrative tasks to ensure responsible stewardship of public resources.
- Demonstrates sound judgment and initiative in solving problems while working under general supervision.
- Greets participants, families, and spectators, fostering a friendly and welcoming atmosphere at games and events.
- Assists participants with registration processes and provides guidance on program offerings and placement.
- Responds to questions, concerns, and feedback from participants and families in a timely, respectful manner.
- Supports coaches and volunteers by providing materials, scheduling assistance, and ongoing encouragement.
- Helps coordinate practice and game schedules to accommodate participant needs and facility availability.
- Attends games, practices, and events to provide visible leadership and support.
- Assists in preparing and distributing program communications, such as flyers, emails, schedules, and social media updates.
- Tracks participation numbers and gathers feedback to better understand community interests and trends.
- Participates in community outreach efforts to increase awareness and accessibility of programs.
- Helps maintain equipment and supplies to ensure safe and enjoyable experiences for participants.
- Documents incidents, injuries, or concerns and follows up with appropriate communication and action.
- Contributes ideas during staff meetings to improve program quality and participant engagement.
- Provides support for special events, tournaments, clinics, or community celebrations.
- Performs related administrative or program support tasks as needed to ensure smooth operations and positive participant experiences.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of community recreation, athletic league coordination, and program development.
- Age-appropriate athletic instruction, player development, and inclusive programming strategies.
- Safety standards, risk management practices, and basic first aid procedures.
- Customer service principles and effective community engagement practices.
- Volunteer coordination, coaching fundamentals, and team dynamics.
- Conflict resolution techniques and behavioral management strategies.
- Basic budgeting, scheduling, and administrative processes related to program operations.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and maintain positive relationships with diverse populations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with participants, families, staff, and community partners.
- Organizational and time-management skills to coordinate multiple leagues, events, and priorities simultaneously.

Other Qualifications
- Associates degree in recreation, sports management, kinesiology, physical education, or a related field.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience working with community members, youth, or adults in recreational or athletic programs; experience leading or supporting organized activities or events.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage participants, families, volunteers, and community partners.
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Physical Education, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
- Prior experience planning, coordinating, and evaluating athletic leagues, tournaments, or community programs.
- Experience training, mentoring, or supervising volunteers, coaches, or staff.
- Experience working with diverse populations and fostering inclusive, accessible programming.
- Knowledge of current trends in youth and adult sports, community recreation, and inclusive programming.
- Experience using registration, scheduling, or program management software.
Additional experience is accepted as a minimum requirement in lieu of the postsecondary degree on the following basis: additional four (4) years in lieu of the bachelor’s degree, and additional two (2) years in lieu of an associate degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of licenses/certificates by NRPA and FRPA or the ability to possess within one year of date of appointment to position.
- Possession of a valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.
