POSITION GOAL
To provide legal services for the school district.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
The Deputy General Counsel shall carry out the performance responsibilities listed below.
- Perform a wide variety of duties including provision of professional legal services for all departments, divisions and offices of the school district.
- Supervise and manage assigned attorneys, including workload distribution, performance oversight, and professional development.
- Ensure the delivery of timely, high-quality legal services across assigned practice areas, establishing accountability and consistency in legal support.
- Coordinate with the General Counsel to ensure matters are properly routed, prioritized, and tracked.
- Support the implementation of office procedures and workflow standards established by the Office of the General Counsel.
- Attend School Board meetings, workshops, and executive-level meetings as assigned to support the General Counsel.
- Serve as second chair to the General Counsel at Board meetings and other high-level proceedings, assisting in preparation, issue tracking, and follow-up.
- Assist in reviewing Board agenda items, identifying legal risks, and preparing legal guidance.
- Monitor and follow up on legal matters arising from Board actions and executive discussions.
- Act on behalf of the General Counsel, as designated, in meetings, communications, and legal matters to ensure continuity of leadership and legal oversight.
- Escalate significant legal, operational, or risk-related issues to the General Counsel as appropriate.
- Provide strategic legal guidance on high-risk, complex, and sensitive matters impacting the District, including governance, compliance, litigation, and operational risk.
- Represent the School Board in litigation brought by or against the school district.
- Draft and/or review Board policies, contracts and documents.
- Render legal opinions.
- Perform or direct legal research.
- Coordinate and direct investigations of claims and complaints by or against the School Board.
- Assist in the acquisition of land for the School Board through negotiation or condemnation proceedings.
- Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.
- Participate in training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- An earned degree from an accredited law school.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in professional legal work.
Admission to the Florida Bar. - Admission to the General Bar of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
- Computer skills as required for the position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrated experience in public sector, governmental, or education law.
- Bilingual skills.

Frequently collaborates with the General Counsel, School Board members, Superintendent, senior leadership, District administrators, external legal counsel, and regulatory agencies to provide legal guidance, ensure compliance, and support effective decision-making
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently as needed to move objects.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board.
