Controller, Southern Alberta
In this role, the Controller, Southern Alberta will be a key part of a high-performing operational team dedicated to delivering construction projects in the Southern Alberta and Interior BC region. As the Controller, Southern Alberta, you will be responsible for providing project accounting leadership and support for these projects, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficient financial management.
You will work closely with project teams, and operational leadership to ensure timely and accurate cost management, forecasting, and financial reporting.
This position will be in-office based out of the Calgary, AB location and will report to the Senior Director of Finance.
What You Will Be Working On
Accountable for the financial management of a portfolio of projects, including gross profit, project percent complete forecasting, WIP, AR, IFRS 15 revenue recognition and backlog.
Audit project profitability reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company reporting policies and accounting standards.
Monitor project profitability, including claims management to identify areas for risk and opportunities to the business and our accounting position.
Establish trusted partnerships with operational District leaders by delivering insightful reporting metrics, meaningful analysis and identifying forecast risk and opportunities.
Manage and complete the quarter-end and year-end close processes for district projects, including reconciliations and financial reporting.
Supervise, coach, and mentor district finance staff, providing guidance and support to ensure high performance and professional development.
Oversee IFRS 16 lease management and reporting for the District.
Collaborate with project managers, construction directors, and other stakeholders to provide financial insights and support for pursuits, project planning and execution.
Ensure compliance with financial regulations and company policies, including internal controls and external audit requirements.
Support the development and implementation of financial systems and processes to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Be a business partner to the operational leadership team and ensure monthly forecasting of financial performance is accurate and complete.
Assist with monthly and quarterly reporting and analysis as well as assist with the development of the annual business plan.
Monitor project cash flow and working capital for the district.
Liaise with and provide information to both internal and external auditors.
Participate in process improvement initiatives, system optimizations and strategic priorities with the broader finance team across the country.
Handle ad-hoc financial assignments and additional projects as required.
What We Are Looking For
University degree in Accounting, Finance or relevant education
CPA or other relevant professional designation
Relevant project financial management experience of at least 5 to 10 years
Supervisory experience between 5 to 10 years
Solid understanding of construction contracts and delivery models including IPD, construction management, and joint ventures
Strong Microsoft Excel proficiency considered an asset
Experience in a multi-company environment
Proficiency with ERP systems
Construction and public company experience is an asset
Excellent communications skills, both written and oral, customer service oriented, and a team player
Ability to effectively manage a high volume of work, consistently meet deadlines, and maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, while also understanding the broader context of the business Ability to forge, grow and maintain positive relationships and partnerships with multiple groups and sophisticated stakeholders
Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously within tight deadlines and deal with unpredictable activities and requests
Capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment
Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving skills
Hands-on, accountable, and comfortable standing behind the accuracy of the numbers
