Job Description
Summary: Baton Rouge General Medical Center is seeking an Intern for their Respiratory Care department. The role involves working collaboratively with a Respiratory Therapist to support patient care through equipment maintenance, EKG procedures, and adherence to safety protocols.
Responsibilities:
- Maintains cleanliness and serviceability of respiratory equipment
- Cleans and checks equipment, making sure it is sterile and ready for patient use 100% of the time
- Reports repair needs upon discovery
- Removes damaged/unsafe equipment from usage
- Checks quantity gauges and exchanges oxygen tanks, regulators, racks, etc. as needed
- Returns all equipment to proper location at end of shift
- Transports equipment to and from assigned locations as needed
- Receives request for equipment, determines availability and/or status of requested equipment and communicates same
- Transfers respiratory equipment to patient care area and/or to respiratory department, following proper Infection Control and body mechanic procedures
- Communicates with Respiratory and other patient care staff on receiving unit of equipment's arrival and/or condition
- Reports in immediately upon completion of assignment; accurately logs location of equipment per departmental practice
- Practices appropriate safety, environmental and infection control procedures
- Actively participates in maintaining the cleanliness of the patient care environment
- Ensures patient safety by adhering to BRGMC Safety Policy guidelines
- Follows BRGMC policies and procedures related to operation and maintenance of equipment
- Reports any unsafe conditions/equipment to bio-med immediately upon discovery
- Assists with preparation of instruments and equipment in need of decontamination
- Assists others during performance of proper aseptic technique
- Ensures isolation precautions and infection control measures are maintained during patient care as appropriate
- Performs EKGs
- Verifies MD Order and gathers necessary equipment
- Performs hand hygiene and identifies patient using 2 hospital approved identifiers
- Explains procedure to patient and/or family
- Performs 12-lead EKG
- Prints EKG and verifies accurate copy for chart
- Transmits the EKG and delivers results provider or chart depending on result
- Charges for the EKG in Order Management
- Retrieves Old EKG in Lahearts as requested
- Performs all other duties as assigned
- Provides lifting services to patient care staff as requested
- Attends all required meetings and in-services
- Delivers mail, packages, medical records, etc. as requested
- Performs other and/or more complex duties as assigned by supervisor, within scope of individual ability and knowledge
Required Qualifications:
- College student on a clinical pathway needing experience working in a hospital (Clinical pathways include but are not limited to: respiratory, pre-med, nursing, echo tech in training, monitor tech in training, patient care associate in training, etc.)
- Ability to lift, carry and transport equipment of various weights
- Ability to understand and carry out instructions
- Dependable and motivated to complete duties without constant supervision
- Ability to interact appropriately with a diverse population of customers
- Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position
- Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position
