About the Role
As a Principal Engineering Manager at ABBYY, you will lead two backend feature teams while remaining deeply hands-on in technical decision-making and architectural leadership. This role uniquely blends people leadership, delivery ownership, and principal-level engineering influence, ensuring the development of high-quality, scalable backend systems that power ABBYY’s intelligent automation platform.
You will play a critical role in shaping engineering culture, driving technical excellence, and enabling teams to deliver impactful, reliable solutions at scale.
Key Responsibilities
People & Team Leadership
Lead, mentor, and grow two backend feature teams (~8 engineers total)
Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development conversations
Partner with Recruiting and HR to hire top talent and build scalable onboarding and progression frameworks
Foster a culture of psychological safety, continuous learning, and engineering excellence
Technical Strategy & Architecture
Act as a principal-level technical authority across backend systems
Drive architectural decisions across technologies including .NET (C#), Node.js, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, and Cloudflare Workers
Define and enforce coding standards, testing strategies, and deployment best practices
Serve as the escalation point for complex technical and architectural challenges
Delivery & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner closely with Product Management to refine roadmaps, define scope, and deliver predictable outcomes
Monitor team velocity, remove blockers, and ensure consistent delivery execution
Collaborate with Platform Engineering and SRE teams on SLAs, observability, reliability, and cost optimization
Champion responsible, effective use of AI-assisted development workflows across teams
Qualifications
Required
10+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years leading engineering teams
Deep expertise in .NET (C#) and Node.js in production environments
Strong hands-on experience with Kubernetes and cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure)
Proven experience with Cloudflare Workers and edge computing architectures
Strong background in distributed systems, API design, and event-driven architectures
Demonstrated success hiring, mentoring, and developing engineers across multiple levels
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Active practitioner and advocate of AI-assisted development practices
Preferred
Experience with multi-cloud architectures and/or FinOps practices
Familiarity with additional Cloudflare products (e.g., Pages, AI Gateway, Zero Trust)
Experience working in distributed or remote-first engineering organizations
Experience hiring and scaling teams in Central or Eastern European markets
Salary Range:
The anticipated base salary range for this position is between 23,800,000 HUF and 32,200,000 HUF. Base salary ranges may vary by geographic location and relevant experience, education, certifications, and seniority as compared to others doing substantially similar work. There is no guarantee an offer will be at the top of the posted range based on the salary analysis.
